About Manassas, VA

There are several theories pertaining to the origin of the name Manassas. Manassas Gap, a pass in the northern Blue Ridge Mountains on the border of Fauquier and Warren counties, was the first entity to bear the name. Some think the name is Native American in origin, but the most commonly accepted theory is that a man named Manassa of French origin or Manasseh of Jewish heritage lived in or near the gap at the time of its naming. What is not ambiguous is the role Manassas played in the American Civil War.

The First Battle of Bull Run was fought near the city on July 21, 1861, and was the first major land battle of the conflict, as the North sought to bring a quick end to the rebellion. Instead, the Union forces were routed by the South, with the Blues retreating to Washington, DC. With the defeat, the North realized the war would be a much more prolonged affair, and it served to galvanize the Union troops. The Second Battle of Bull Run 13 months later was a much larger (62,000 Union troops vs. 50,000 Confederates) and bloodier (18,000 killed or wounded between the two armies) affair, but the result was much the same, with the South gaining another victory, as well as the confidence to push forward into Maryland - Union territory. Antietam awaited.
