About Fairfax, VA
Although Fairfax, VA, is located within Fairfax County, it is an independent city that is politically independent. Additionally, although the county seat is within the city's confines, the land on which the county complex rests is itself an unincorporated enclave. The city is named for Thomas Fairfax, the 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, who was awarded 5 million acres of land in Northern Virginia by King Charles. The town was founded in 1805 as Providence, but was renamed Fairfax in 1874. It became an independent city in 1961. The Historic Fairfax County Courthouse, built in 1799, was not only the site of the first Confederate officer casualty of the American Civil War, but exchanged hands between the North and South no less than three times during the war, as Union troops seized the building to use as a military outpost. A trolley line was built connecting Fairfax with Washington, DC, in 1904, establishing Fairfax as an early "bedroom community" to the nation's capital. Today, Fairfax is known for its strong public school system and high median salary, and Forbes Magazine ranked Fairfax #3 in its "Top 25 Places to Live Well" survey in 2009.
